Localization in heavy multipath

Abstract: Wireless localization has traditionally relied in a line of sight between wireless nodes - be it in GPS systems where clear sight to multiple satellites is required, or indoor localization systems that exploit time-of-flight. In this talk, we will discuss challenges that arise from heavy multipath, and new models that have to be established to deal with this situation. We will also outline how detrimental effects from multipath propagation can be mitigated, and even converted to advantages.

Zebedee - a mobile hand-held localisation and mapping system

Abstract: Zebedee is a hand-held device that allows an operator to map an environment in 3D in the time it takes them to walk around. The system uses a small laser scanner and is based on the Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) techniques from the mobile robotics world. At the heart of the system is an algorithm that matches features across scans and uses the tracked features to accurately estimate the six-degree-of-freedong pose and trajectory of the scanning head as it moves about the environment. The system has been used to map complex cave systems and significant cultural heritage sites, including the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
