IEEE’s Green ICT Initiative
IEEE’s Green ICT Initiative (http://greenict.ieee.org
) , launched in 2015 by IEEE’s Future Directions Committee and the IEEE Communications Society, seeks to build a holistic approach to sustainability through Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by incorporating green metrics throughout IEEE technical domains and society in general. Viewed through the triple bottom line of sustainability (economic, environmental and social), the Green ICT Initiative offers a compelling opportunity for IEEE to demonstrate the full impact of the technology innovation it supports.
Co-located with ICC'17. the initiative is holding its first 1½ day Greening Through ICT Summit in Paris next May 19th and 20th 2017 (http://greenict.ieee.org
). By bringing stakeholders from industry, various IEEE Societies, university R&D and government policy makers together, the GtICT Summit will examine opportunities where ICT is used as a tool to improve environmental and societal functions, while also improving the energy efficiency, carbon footprint and life cycle management of ICT itself. Its objective will be to identify the combination of key technological, commercial and public policy challenges that must be overcome to achieve sustainability in our increasingly connected world.
